Top 3 Benefits of Agility Ladder Training

Agility training is an essential component of general physical education in schools, as well as training for athletes in soccer, football, basketball, and tennis, among others.

For non-athletes, training to improve agility is essential to improve stamina so that you don’t get tired easily after a normal day’s work.

While there are many agility workout tools, agility ladders are the most popular training gear for agility training because they provide the most benefits without any complicated setup.

What is an Agility Ladder?

There are two kinds of sports training ladders used in physical training:

- one is a rigid ladder that can be leaned to a vertical wall

- and another type of agility ladder which are lines that can be thrown down on the ground

The second type of ladder is more popular because you can adjust the rungs on a line, which prevents any tangling accidents. And because you can adjust the distance between lines, you can also have added flexibility that different agility drills require.

This portable nylon ladder is often placed flat on the ground, with rungs that help trainees practice nimble footwork between steps. Most nylon agility ladders measure between 10 – 30 feet.

3 Training Benefits of Agility Ladders

Common agility training drills done with ladders resemble tango, jumping rope and hopscotch steps. They are designed to bring out the following benefits:

1. Increase Speed

Speed is a critical factor for energy retention so that you can renew performance when you are feeling a slump.

Sports coaches advice that athletes habitually move their feet in quick motions to rev up their bodies over a long match when energy dips down between the 1st and 2nd half of a game.

Common agility drills to increase speed is the lateral speed drill that uses shuffle steps.

2. Improve Stamina

Stamina is different from endurance as it refers to a person’s continued performance at peak levels over prolonged periods, without feeling easily tired. The more physically fit you are, the higher your stamina levels will be.

The walking plank drill is a good agility drill to improve stamina.

3. Train Focus

Agility’s major benefit is to stay mentally alert as you change direction. Agility ladders train you to concentrate efforts on your feet as you do agility drills. This boosts mental alertness.

A good way to train your concentration is to lessen looking down as you do a forward shuffling speed drill, when you step on each rung. An important note is to train your steps to land on the balls of your feet to decrease injuries.
